I was snow skiing 6 weeks after my amputation. I water ski, play tennis, horseback ride, and am basically able to do almost anything with the right prosthetic.
Don’t forget, you have to laugh at yourself sometimes too. Sense of humor is a must.

I am so sorry about your accident. Many people are praying for you and wishing you well. Please remember when you’re feeling like giving up or wondering why this happened to you, that my first thought when I heard about this was what a miracle it is that you survived. As much as I wish this terrible accident had never happened, I am still grateful to be writing to you and pulling for you rather than reading about you in the past tense. I know that your family feels the same way. When I heard your mother describe the agonizing wait for help, my heart just shattered. I am a mother of five, and I can only imagine her feelings of fear and helplessness. At the same time, I believe that having her there with you was probably the greatest comfort and gift. Her love surely sustained you and kept you here during those precious moments when it was just her and her baby. I truly believe the power of a mother’s bond can keep death at bay. You are young, strong and capable. You still have so much more to do and be. Every moment that we live is a gift and an opportunity to make things better. Don’t give up on yourself. Hey, I don’t know how exactly write a reply for you… But well, I’ll just try. First, I’m from Brazil! I want you to know that people here is praying for you too (you’re very beloved!). And also, I had never heard about you before what happened to you. I saw a report on UOL webside, and I researched a little more about you. Well, I just loved your blog, I became a fan of yours! And then… I just felt somethings about your accident. I want you to know something that happened to me when I was a kid… I suffered an acident when I was 9, I was riding a bike in a park, then I just had the idea to down a slope, but at the end of the slope, the brake of the bicycle failed. I flipped, and I was injured. I remember the doctor saying “she’s supposed to be dead”. I think he said it to my mom. I also have a very courageous mother hahaha. At the end, I just lost a tooth, and I got a scar on my mouth. The scar is very big. I was the prettiest in my class, so it just changed my life… as I grow up, the scar got smaller, but it’s still there. I had to learn how to smile differently from other people. But if I hadn’t suffered this accident, I wouldn’t be the same person. I wouldn’t believe in God… even my family being Christian, I didn’t know Him before that. I was very young, but now I have 21, I’m already married and I have a very hard but very happy life. I want to talk with you, it’s very good to speak to people that understands what you feel, I want you to know that you can count on me, my english is not so great but I really think that we can speak normally hahaha. Anyway, I keep praying for you, everyday I research news to know if you got better, so I hope you recover soon, and Lo, remember that you’re never alone, God is always watching over you. He really loves you. I know it’s hard to understand, but one day, you’ll feel glad because God chose you, you’re very special for him and for people around you (and I think the world! haha). I suffered injuries from a very serious motor vehicle accident back in 1989 just eat of Plano, TX. I was 21 yrs old at the time and was momentarily devastated by my injuries: Nearly lost my entire left arm (chemical burns, fractures and nerve loss), broken jaw in 2 places, severely damaged right knee, and 40% of my body was covered by chemical burns and asphalt abrasions. I felt very disfigured and wondered if I would ever be accepted amongst my “beautiful” friends again, find love, etc. It took me 3 yrs with therapists, my strong will and the support of family and friends to make it back to what I was before my accident to return something close to what I once was. I am an avid exerciser to this day because I learned early on that I must continue with physical strengthening to maintain my damaged body. MY POINT? I simply want you to know that you WILL be beautiful again. You WILL turn heads again. You WILL reach a point in your life where your injuries will NOT be the 1st thing people see when they see you. I have enjoyed watching and hearing about your will, your faith and your journey to recovery. Keep up the good work. Do NOT give up!!!

Hi Lolo. I read about your accident and wanted to wish you a speedy and complete recovery. I had a boat propeller accident when I was 18 and nearly lost my left arm. I did rehab for a year and the movement finally came back. I would say it’s 90% or so of what it should be otherwise. I also am a Christian and lean on the Lord for strength. I was able to become a surgeon and operate without much difficulty. I pray that you don’t let this get you down and that God makes His plan for you known.
God bless you, Lauren. I, too, am a born again Christian. I am so sorry that you were injured so badly and are now having to deal with so much. I cannot even imagine how hard that is. I would imagine it’s a day by day, hour by hour, and often times minute by minute thing.
I don’t know why this has happened, but you remind me of the surfer Bethany Hamilton. She is also a born again Christian and had her arm bitten off by a shark. By the grace of God, her hard work and determined spirit, she overcame her “disability” and went on to become an incredible professional surfer and has touched thousands of people with the love of Christ. She has reached more people for Christ since her accident than–I believe–she ever could have without it happening. You, your story, and your journey remind me of Bethany. I have seen, already, our great God use you and your sweet family to touch the nation. The faith in Christ that you all have, and His peace, are so evident in your attitude and the gentle words you speak. I believe God is using you to touch the people out there who need Him, who don’t know Him…but see hope in you. Hope that, despite their struggles, they too can overcome. Hope that, they too can have that kind of peace and love.
I hope this encourages you to “keep on keepin’ on”. I know that you have a long road ahead of you and there will be good days and bad days. And that’s ok. Know that many are praying for you and your family (I pray, too, for the pilot of the plane–your friend I think? Poor thing, I bet he feels false guilt over the incident). Know that the Lord Jesus Christ is with you, is in you and is for you. I pray you all experience the love and peace of the Holy Spirit every single day. I heard about your story a few weeks ago and wanted to let you know I have been praying for you and a swift recovery. I was following your progress in the news and was happy to hear you have been doing well. Today was the first day I had seen pictures of you since the accident and as concerned as I was about your recovery, one is always interested in seeing progress in someone who has been through what you have been through, and I got to say….you are still HOT!!…WOW…you have lost nothing in that area. Just saw a video on my MSN home page, about your recovery and your positive attitude. You are still a very beautiful woman, have it a lot better than most, and are definitely blessed. Some of these things may be hard to see/understand at the moment, but take it from someone who has seen their fair share of adversity, stemming from a workplace accident in 2007. Every MD who has seen/treated me & knows the details of what happened, look at me as though they can’t believe I survived, and they tell me the percentage of survival, which sometimes is good and sometimes not so good. You are definitely blessed and remember to focus on the positive things you have going for you, and not dwell on the negative, it took me a while to get to the point, to realize I’M still here for a reason and I’m sure you are too! Don’t lose your faith, I know mine was tested for quite some time, but time really does heal all wounds if one choose the positive perspective to look at a traumatic situation. I am so amazed by your bravery and acceptance of your accident. I had a similar freak accident with my eye about 3 years ago and although I didn’t lose it, I’m now permanently blind in one eye. And the first thing I thought was, of course “shoot!” but then I began to think, that’s why you have two eyes, right!? God gave us almost two of everything as a “just in case”. It’s definitely a very very difficult thing to cope with but I’m sure you’re very strong and you’ll come to an understanding that it could have been worse! That’s what I think every day. And the thing that really helped me the most was the love and encouragement I got from all of my family and friends. All of their support really helped me with a fast recovery and now I’m doing better than ever. You begin to get back to the norm and keep on keeping on like nothing ever happened. You’re still a beautiful woman and I admire your strength so much. Definitely keep that because it will be important for the rest of your life. Lauren – You have been on my mind and heart since I first saw the news of your accident. I am a Christian and I immediately started prating for you when I heard what had happened – something just grabbed me. When your parents were interviewed and so clearly professed the faith both you and your family have in Jesus, I just cried! I knew that you were being cared for by the only one who can really give us true comfort.
I am amazed and thrilled by reports of your progress, and your true faith in our Jesus. I know I don’t understand what you are going through, but I just wanted to drop you a line to tell you that you’ve got lots of people who are praying for you in Calgary. You are a very brave girl! My father lost his right arm in an accident when I was six and I saw him work hard to overcome all the struggles and it was not easy but he made it through and you will too. Its important that you have such a strong family to be there for you. Something my dad told me right after his accident was that God does not give us anything we can’t handle. It is so the truth too. It sounds like you are a strong girl and you will make it through!
Loren, you are a lovely young lady, and you might want to pass along your story and recovery to some of the wounded Veterans coming home from Afghanistan and Iraq.
I know these young men would be pleased beyond belief to have you walk in to their hospitals and treatment centers to visit and share with them. I also believe the experience would benefit you just as much as it would them.
My youngest daughter is a former model, and now a Registered Nurse and I know her patients are always pleased when she steps into their rooms. She loves the work!

It made my heart ache just thinking what your parents must be going through watching their baby go through what must be one of the most frightening ordeals of her life. As a Christian I know that God is in control but that doesn’t stop the pain and fear of your challenges. Just know this TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL OF YOUR HEART AND LEAN NOT UPON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING? I am praying for you and your parents too.

As a complete stranger to you, finding the words to express my sincere prayer is difficult. My faith in my own life is steadfast and it is always refreshing to know that I am connected to strangers at a completely different level for this simple fact. No one can possible understand the path that has been set before you. While every situation is relative and I could never understand what you must work through, I can empathize with injury, suffering and healing. The details to that part of my life are insignificant at this point but I can remember having to find myself again. As a happy optomistic person I spent the early days, months, and even year with that “persona”. One day I realized though that God expects us to feel every emotion that we are capable of and he even accepts it when those feelings cause us to question him. I did that, and while you likely know that you can do that also..allowing yourself to do so can be difficult but it does help. I remember sitting in church one day and it was though the minister could read my mind and the events that were taking place in my life. His sermon spoke right to me and it was a stretch to sit through the entire service because of the tears I was trying to contain. Still, he made one point crystal clear: If you are not questioning the things that happen to you, if you are not questioning God’s path for you, then you are not growing in your faith. Asking the questions and being angry is OK and at this time in your life probably the way God expects you to show your deep devotion as you turn to him to sort through this ordeal.
As you do so, also consider what it is that defines you and what it is that you WANT to define who you are. A life changing event such as this tends to take over because you are engrossed in the daily reality of it. There was a time when I realized that my accident did not have to define me anymore,,,it did that you know. The world around me contrinbuted to a great deal of that. There was a point when I realized that I didn’t have to be that girl that fell 80 feet off the cliff anymore. While that will always be apart of my life, it no longer defines me. We spend so much of our lives being defined by a multitude of things and sometimes when we look at them together we realize that they are more a combination of events or of what others have told us about ourselves. You are who you are regardless of this life changing event. So what makes you who you are? Only you can answer this but likely it’s more because of the love that you give, the faith that you share, the friend that you work to be, and the daughter & sister that God made you than any of your accomplishments alone. Your character is what defines you. When the grief and frustration begin to settle down you will be able to see YOURSELF more clearly again and you will find peace that there you are…Lauren Shruggs: a daughter, a friend, a sister, a successful person and maybe one day a wife and a mom too! I am now 36, I was 19 when I fell off a cliff (seriously) and I am here to assure you that there will come a day, not for awhile but it will come, when you wake up on the date of your accident and you go about your day without even realizing the signfigance of it!!

I cant imagine what you are going through, but believe when I say that you will get through this and you will be a much stronger person. Hey Girl! Just sending a note from my heart to yours! NOBODY can ever understand what you are going through, so please let me say that this note is not to compare my injuries to yours or for you to think that I can begin to understand (any & all of) what you are going through… But I do understand the confusion, the emptiness that nobody else can feel when you are alone and “Going Through” the entirety of things….
I was involved in a very bad motorcycle wreck at 16 years of age and disfigured me facially pretty bad. I was also being raised in a very abusive household, so my scars ran VERY DEEP. I ended up living a life of total wreckless abandonment. I didn’t understand the unfairness of the pains I went through… but there was a purpose on the other side of it.
You see, I had NO relationship with God and thought that if there was a God, He must hate me…
A BIG FAT LIE…
Later in life, I was introduced to God, through the love of Christ and the Bible. Something I never had in my life. God never intended for such an awful accident to happen to me, that’s not His will. I don’t have all the answers, but God never intended my accident to happen, but sometimes rotten things happen to nice people. No sugar coating here-Just keeping it real. BUT-
GOD had a purpose for my life, I didn’t die and He saw fit to show me His Love unto me through Jesus Christ. He took my messed up life and now I use my testimony unto other hurting women and men coming out of addiction and incarceration.
You see, scars come in all shapes and sizes and most of them are hidden away, deep in our hearts, where nobody else can see or feels them, but our lifestyles can show are wounds very openly. Many of these men & women never had a chance to live a life where anyone took the time to show them that “God is Love” & “He Does Care” for them.
God is no respecter of persons, Christ died for all, not by anything we could work for, earn or “being a nice person”, but only by Gods grace through His real and tangible love for us.
All I ask of you is this, Look Up, and give God your heart and watch things change. He can take any mistake, pain, accident and turn it around and produce a miracle! You are a beautiful Miracle! You are still here, so now just ask Him to show you the Way and He will! Be patient with yourself and don’t let the “ugliness of other people’s words & actions” towards you or about you bring you down. That was the part that hurt the most for me-People can be so uncaring and thoughtless of how they present themselves about what you are personally going through. Prayers, Empathy & love I give unto you-But Christ said in our weakness, He makes us strong!
With God on your side and all the support you have around you, I can see you one day soon, being an inspiration unto so many people! Men & women coming out of the armed services have gone and are going to go through the very things you are experiencing right now…
God made you a people person-I can see you being an instrument of light and love unto those who are “going through”… Because you can’t give unto anyone, anything of true substance, unless you have experienced a similar situation and “Got Through It”.
I am a person of this value: “If you have never been “THROUGH” hard times in your life, you will never have enough “character” to be a friend of mine.” Romans 5:1-6 is a Bible verse that has gotten me through so much. “Girlfriend, I have earned enough character by “going through” stuff, that I could put Looney Toon’s out of business!” (You are so young, you might want to ask your Mom about the Looney Toon’s Cartoons.. smile).
I am praying for you! Give your Momma a hug and thank her for being the instrument God chose to give you life! I am praying for her too! Both you beautiful ladies stay strong!
And here is something I want to end with. Both of you go out and get some of those paintball guns-If the paparazzi and news people start aiming their callous behaviors your way-Blast them!

I saw the story on the Today show and heard how your mother aches for you…just like any mother should. But, I hope you will share my story with her. I lost my son, who was probably your age, in an accident…they tried to save him, but they couldn’t…and every since then, instead focusing on the grief, I focus on those who have been given a second chance at life…those who persevere through adversity. You have a second chance to do great things with your life and your life story. I here to encourage you to do those great things God has in store for you. Share your story with others and give others inspiration to do great things. I want your mom to know that that is what is in store for you. Hi, I am a Canadian mom, my son was born a left hand amputee. I just wanted you to know that over the years (he is 11 now) that I have raised him there is nothing and I mean nothing that he can’t do! We have also been blessed to be members of the War Amps Champs program, this is a Canadian non profit organization that provides limbs for at birth and accidental amputees. I am writing this to you as I have read of your accident and I know as the young beautiful woman you are that you must be struggling inside with everything; but let me assure you that over the years I have met many beautiful kids who have become beautiful adults and they sometimes have been born missing both legs and various other anomalies. These people let nothing hold them back and I have watched first hand the success that can be achieved. My son Zach is one of the cutest boys you can imagine and I always tell him if someone has a problem with you because of your hand it is their problem and honestly I wouldn’t change a thing about him to give him his left hand he is truly perfect just the way he is. He plays all sports with ease and gusto, he is beyond confident and as I said before he is lovely to behold like light itself. Please remain strong and know the things that you lost don’t define who you are by any stretch!

I have been following stories about your recovery since your accident and I just had to message you. I lost my eye when I was 11 years old (I am now 25) due to an injury as well. Don’t let this hold you back from your dreams. You can still do nearly everything anyone else can do. Losing my eye changed my life, but I would like to think it changed it for the better. I am more humble, more sensitive and more empathetic towards others than I would have been had this not happened. Sometimes people can tell there is something different about my eye, but they never know it is a prosthetic. And who cares if they did? I am still me. You are still you. You weren’t your eye or your hand. You are a beautiful girl still. Show the world that you can still achieve great things! God bless.

Hi Lauren. I was looking around on the internet at teens in accidents because i myself was in a tragic accident and i like reading other people’s inspiring stories and i came across yours. I flipped an ATV ober and thr handle bars came crashing down on my face. Broke my jaw, both eye sockets, my nose and other things lol. I remember standing up and shouting help. Me and a few of my friends were camping so they called 911 and a couple guys helped me on to a fisffhing boat. We had to go across the lake, onto o a four wheeler then up a dirt road to meet the ambulance til life flight came. I remember saying sorry and that i was going to die. I am so lucky to have the friends that i did with me. They were so calm and supportive and have been throughout my recovery. I have never really let anyone ser me break down about it because i do not want people to pity me. I do believe that it has made me stronger though. It hhas been almist 7 months since my accident and ut feels like yesterrday. I also have several more surgeries to compkete. When i look at pictures from before the accident it does get ne down because i feel like i wont ever get back to that..although i have come so far! But beauty cones fron the inside and our tragedies have made us even more beautifulk! We have a miraculous story to tell and maybe inform people about safety precautions to take. I would love to talk to someone who is going through the same emotional state that i am..it would help so much. Just never give up on your dreams. Being that close to death should give us a hell of a reason to live! You are absolutely gorgeous inside and out stay strong and i’ll add you to my prayers!

I have a TBI. I WAS pretty. & petite. I was going 2 be a traumtic E.R. nurse. I had jus gotten married.. I was at the top of my Christian my faith. I tell u this because this was 10 y.o. don’t give up Lauren. I’m sorry this happpened & I’m sorry u will have ups & down. Sometimes u will think u can conquer the world, sometimes u want 2 hit the world. People are critical & don’t understand. I hate it when people say they understand. I feel so disocuraged when my old friends are judgmental & don’t approve/accept the dent in my head.when the words don’t come out…..I tell u this because if you ever want to talk pls feel free to call me or text me. I lost my right eye when I was 14 playing with my Dad’s pistol. I know that feeling of trying to be strong just so everyone you love will feel better…even when you feel like crying. It was one of the few times I saw my Dad really scared…I just wanted him to feel better. Neither my Dad or Mom wanted to tell me my eye was gone when I woke up after Surgery so they got the Doc to do it. I just told him i already knew so they would all be ok. Just don’t try to be TOO strong Lauren, make sure you deal with it when you feel strong enough and don’t carry it for years like I did. You’ll have to learn a few things…like being careful because your depth perception will be gone or changed now..like it’s hard to judge distances playing sports like Basket Ball and Hand Ball. That little ball is hell to hit! I’ve flown planes(with a waiver) and I still shoot. I guess I just wanted to let you know that life really does go on. If you ever need to know anything about living with limited sight feel free to email. From what I’ve read you will have no problem! You seem strong and I’m pulling for you! Don’t let this break your spirit.

Lauren, I don’t know if you read these comments that people left you or not, but it is worth a try. My name is Milana and I’m 31. I just seen the video on hotmail about your accident and wish you a speedy recovery. I’m kinda in the same situation as you, but in a different way. I have a disease called VHL (tumour disease) which affects the main organs in the body and it is rare. I lost vision in my left eye a few years ago because of a tumour in the eye and eventually my eye will have to come out when it starts hurting. I lost my left adrenal gland on my kidney and now in 3 to 4 weeks time will lose that whole kidney which I found out about 3 weeks ago. Right after this surgery I will lose my right adrenal and 3 parts of my right. Kidney dialysis was talked about but, I’m not gonna worry about it until that day comes. I think you are a strong person like myself. No good to stay in your home and be depressed about it. You showed courage when you went out in public with your family. It’s alright to cry because I do it every now and then to help easy the pain and thoughts. Lauren, I saw your interview on the TODAY show at the Olympics! Just wanted to say how lovely you look and how beautiful you are. I think about you every day. For months, I’ve been trying to think of something to say that would help you look forward to your life ahead and be excited about your opportunities. Well, I’m going to share what I’ve come up with, and please try to keep an open mind!
You know fashion is not always about functionality. Just take a look at women’s footwear through the ages! Now, how are we supposed to get anywhere fast in 6-inch spike heels? You now have a startling freedom to accessorize your image without being constrained to looking just like other women! Think about some iconic figures in classic literature, the Phantom of the Opera, for example. What are some new unusual and flashy ways you can depict a woman’s face and hands? Fashion is supposed to inspire. Once again, we are looking at space exploration and possibly travel to other planets. In an unfamiliar environment, as human beings, we adapt to new demands placed on us. How can you represent that visually with accessories that other women can’t wear? I will be watching to see what you are wearing on your face and hands. 😉
Also, on a more serious note: Lauren, there is so much suffering in the celebrity world that most of the rest of us can’t see. With the infirmity you bear each day that you can’t hide, you bring comfort to others. The serenity, grace and understanding I can see now on your face since your accident isn’t shared by other lovely women your age anywhere on Earth. You have really become a gem. Please continue to let our Lord work in your life.

Steve in his 50’s says he saw Today show this am and heard about it when it first happened as well. He’s had 3 near death accidents with the last one in ’96 spending time on life support and also enduring permanent injuries. Having gained more out of life than he’s lost, if he had it to do over, he wouldn’t.

Hello Lauren: I saw you on TV when I was getting ready for work Thanksgiving week. You look fabulous and your attitude is wonderful. My granddaughter who is 13 could really use your encourangment. She was in an off road dune buggy Thanksgiving which overturned. Her hand was crushed and not knowing better she pulled her hand out from under the vehicle which more severely damaged her hand and all the blood vessels. She was air lifted to Loma Linda Hospital in CA. She underwent 8-10 hrs of surgery that first day and has been undergoing leach therapy to try to get circulation back to her hand and fingers. Last Saturday they did a surgical clean and had to remove the pinky on her right hand. The other fingers are not doing well and, of course, the hand is in danger also. Today they are putting her in a hyperbaric pressure chamber to try to help. She is very discouraged and sad and I thought that if you had a few minutes you could maybe write her to encourage her. I wanted you to know that my little sister, who is only 10 years old, chose you of all people in the world to make a school speech about. The topic is is anyone who has overcome a difficulty (physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.). I remember that even before your accident, she had seen a picture of you somewhere and said you were so pretty and she wants to be just like you because you do so much! I think it’s incredible that your hard work even effects such young little girls. Thank you for your inspiration, and I hope to let you know in January if she is one of the finalists, which I’m sure she will be!

I read your book the first week I was released. It was a gift from my parents. I was so inspired by your candor and bravery. After reading of the accident and all the pain afterwards, my heart hurt for you. I stayed up all night to finish your book 🙂

hi, im Leeann Williford i am going to 5th grade now when i was in 4th grade my teacher was looking up people to show us that got into a bad accindent she found and shound and now im looking you up because I felt really bad for you. You said you had a hard time because you were a model and you couldn’t acept the way you looked and now you do acept it and you are still buetful. God knew the right chose for you wich was let you still be buetful.
